Software Development

NWS has superior skills in Java, C/C++, UNIX shell scripts, HTML and XML demonstrated in the design and development of the Modular Mission Payload Control Software (MMPCS), which includes the development of custom command and control (C2) digital mapping systems using both vector and raster data from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), private industry, and public sources.  These shipboard and land-based systems include

In addition to these military applications, Next Wave’s GBOSS software and maps were recently licensed to Raytheon to be used at the 2009 Indy 500 car race to provide perimeter security from an aerostat.

NWS is currently expanding their capabilities in the design and development of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) based C2 systems.  NWS is using ESRI’s ArcGIS’s ArcObjects to design next generation C2 systems for customers such as the USMC GBOSS program. NWS has developed state-of-art Line-of-Sight (LOS) and  Radial Line-on-Sight (RLOS)  map layers that give the warfighter insight into where the enemy can hide and where additional sensor coverage maybe be needed.

For the Department of Energy (DoE) NWS is providing state-of-the-art system design and application development.  In 2007 an NWS team designed a wireless security sensor mesh network for the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Y-12 Complex. This team was responsible for creating GIS layers consisting of buildings, elevation, vegetation, and other infrastructure using different GIS system (including ArcGIS). NWS performed spatial analysis and line-of-sight studies on the data to optimize the positioning of wireless access points and sensors within the wireless network for optimal coverage.

Mapping & Imagery

NWS employees have designed and developed numerous other highly successful digital mapping systems, including the Army’s Air Defense Control Platform (ADCP), the Marine Corps’s Pioneer UAV Digital Mapping System (PDMS), components of the Air Force’s 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron “Hurricane Hunters” C-130 meteorological system, and  software components for the National Imagery and Mapping Agency’s (currently NGA) MC&G Utility Software Environment (NIMAMUSE), which supported all DOD mapping and imagery formats for both raster and vector formats.  NWS has fostered relationships with other small businesses that allow NWS to subcontract expertise in the area of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) layered mapping, which allows the warfighter to efficiently query relevant map information.

Additionally, NWS has expertise in the design, development and integration of both optical and acoustic imagery systems.  Video sub-systems include MPEG-2 TS, H.264, MPEG 4 and Motion JPEG.  Acoustic imagery systems include the Navy’s Environmental Post-Mission Analysis (EPMA) system, used in the analysis of sidescan sonar imagery for Mine Countermeasures (MCM) missions from manned and unmanned vehicles, and the Navy’s Data Handling and Realtime Mosaicing Application (DHARMA) used during mine-hunting missions aboard MCM-class minehunting ships.

Mobile Communications

The Next Wave Systems Mobile Comms Trailer is a robust, mobile platform. When no power connectivity is available, this platform is capable of deploying a mobile mesh network. Along with other capabilities, this platform harnesses the natural energy produced by the wind and sun for an uninterrupted power supply and a simultaneous recharge of its battery bank. With over 1500 amp-hours of available storage, this small, mobile package power solution will provide several days of energy reserves.

WASPSS Wide Area Sensor-Driven Persistent Surveillance System

Next Wave Systems, LLC’s Wide Area Sensor-driven Persistent Surveillance System (WASPSS) is a software suite that utilizes a distributed application architecture for controlling sensors and displays geographic-oriented information to an operator.  WASPSS takes advantage of a patented (Patent No. US 6,873,866 B1) software architecture, Modular Mission Payload Control Software (MMPCS), which was originally developed for the US Navy’s Program Office for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV).  MMPCS utilizes an open architecture which allows rapid integration of any payload on any platform, in virtually any configuration.  This provides the ability to control sensors remotely, fuse sensor data, and provide a user-friendly operator display. It greatly enhances situational awareness and provides actionable information to accomplish a wide range of security-related missions.


The greatest strengths of the WASPSS are its vast collection of sensor drivers and digital mapping displays.  Many sensors have been integrated in the software including lethal, non-lethals, searchlights, Network Video Recorders (NVRs), radars, Electro-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/IR) cameras and video, Unattended Ground Sensors (UGS), and input devices.  The map engine supports many of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s (NGA’s) map formats including Compressed ARC Digitized Raster Graphics (CADRG).  The easy-to-use map overlay interface enables intelligent decision making, alerting the operator to any system failures or warnings and allowing the operator to control all sensors, display and manage targets and other geographic data, present sensor data, and navigate through the supported map types.

Successful Implementations

RAID – the Rapid Aerostat Initial Deployment (RAID) system utilizes a variety of platforms ranging from tethered aerostats, mobile towers, and relocatable masts. These platforms can relay all system information to a Command and Control (C2) center providing persistent surveillance, timely warning of potential threats, and data gathering for intelligence purposes.

G-BOSS – The US  Marine Corps’ Ground-Based Operational Surveillance System (G-BOSS) is a ground-based, modular, sensor-oriented surveillance system used to detect and identify contacts and objects of interest twenty-four hours a day utilizing fused video and sensor data display.

SPS – The goal of the Navy’s Shipboard Protection System (SPS) is to integrate improved Situational Awareness (SA), enhanced warning, and engagement capabilities.  SPS is designed to allow naval ship commanders increased time for the detection, identification, decision, engagement, and assessment sequence while moored to a pier, at anchor, or engaged in restricted maneuvering.

Next Wave Awarded SeaPort-e Task Order

On 3 May 2010 Next Wave was awarded a five-year, $15.2M SeaPort-e Task Order (TO) by the Crane Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center. This TO is a follow-on to a previous effort, and features subcontract partners URS/EG&G Division, Technology Services Corporation, Defense Research Associates, Inc., 39 Degrees North, and Paul Cibuzar Consulting. The primary scope includes software development, particularly for systems utilizing or related to high-resolution Imagery and Digital Mapping.


On 9 November 2009 Next Wave participated in Purdue University’s kick-off for its new Visual Analytics for Command, Control, and Interoperability Environments (VACCINE). VACCINE is a U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Center of Excellence led by Purdue’s Dr. David Ebert. In attendance at this event were Dr. Cordova, President of Purdue University; U. S. Congressmen Stephen Buyer and Mark Souder; DHS Directors Dr. Starnes Walker and Dr. Matthew Clark; DHS Chief Science Advisor Dr. Joseph Kielman; Dr. John Stasko from the Georgia Institute of Technology and Dr. Fred Roberts from Rutgers University. During the Program Next Wave’s DARPA-funded collaborative Research and Development effort with Purdue, UT Phone was showcased.

Next Wave supports one of Army’s Top 10 Inventions of 2008

Next Wave’s software development team provided support to NSWC Crane on a project recognized by the U.S. Army as one of its top ten inventions for last year. The Army’s description of this achievement is as follows:

“Enhanced Mobile Rapid Aerostat Initial Deployment Vehicle; U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development, and Engineering Center

The Enhanced Mobile Rapid Aerostat Initial Deployment Vehicle system combines multiple intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities onto a single, integrated platform. This configuration enables users to rapidly deploy the system anywhere a mission requires additional intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities. Forward operating bases often receive direct and indirect fire on a daily basis and the lack of these capabilities at remote sites place additional risks on Soldiers. The system gives remote operating units the ability to quickly employ the system’s combined capabilities to detect imminent attacks and take the appropriate actions to defeat enemy forces.”

The U.S. Army just announced the award of its R2-3G multiple award IDIQ contract, and Next Wave is proud to be a member of the winning team led by Raytheon Company. The following information comes from the official Army website:

“This acquisition is for the Rapid Response – Third Generation (R2-3G) which will provide support to the Department of Defense (DOD), other Federal agencies, and if authorized by specific legislation, State and Local Governments, e.g. Public Law 108-136 Section 803, tasks for State and Local Governments involving anti-terrorism technology and/or services, in the areas of, technology insertion, system integration/installation, fabrication/prototyping, testing/certification, studies/analyses, logistic support, and training and engineering support, including re-engineering and reverse engineering, for a range of equipment and services. Early Days

Next Wave Systems, LLC was established in September 2005 by its current CEO, Mr. John Crady.  Headquartered in Pekin, IN,.  More than forty people work from four locations in Indiana:  Pekin, Merrillville, Bedford, and Bloomington.  The company also operates a location in Huntsville, AL.

Mr. Crady previously served the US Navy as Expeditionary Warfare Systems Divisions Manager at the Crane Division, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA Crane) in Crane, Indiana.  Upon his decision to leave NAVSEA Crane in June of 2005, he chose an entrepreneurial path and launched Next Wave Systems, LLC as its lone employee. While working as a management consultant to NAVSEA Crane through a subcontract with Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), Mr. Crady formulated a business plan and marketing strategy for his fledgling enterprise. The company concluded 2005 with three employees and a series of $100,000-plus purchase orders in hand.

Growth Phase

The following year, 2006, brought a number of milestones for NWS:

➢The Merrillville location opened as part of the 48,000-square-foot Purdue Technology Center of Northwest Indiana.

This office is an ideal location for the Company’s research and development operations, as the Purdue Technology Center offers a wide variety of resources.  As a result of its close proximity to Purdue, one of the nation’s leading engineering schools, NWS has successfully recruited several talented interns..

The Bloomington office was established within inVenture at the Indiana University Research Park

Similar to its presence in Merrillville, the Bloomington location offers a multitude of shared amenities and IT infrastructure, and allows the Company to pursue partnerships with other emerging high-tech businesses serving the public and private sectors.

➢The company’s headquarters in Pekin, IN moved into a new office

The company holds certification from the U.S. Small Business Administration as a Historically Underutilized Business Zone through at least 2011, when it is up for renewal.

➢The Company was awarded a contract from Department of Energy.

In September 2006, NWS entered into its first partnership with a federal agency other than the Department of Defense.   It was awarded a significant contract to install a wireless communications system to enhance security operations at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Reservation near Knoxville in East Tennessee.

➢The Company hired its first three software engineers.

One of those newly hired engineers brought along a valuable piece of intellectual property in the form of a patent for Modular Mission Payload Architecture. NWS has the sole license for this system, which includes software and hardware.

Following the rapid expansion of 2006, the company saw steady growth during 2007 and 2008. Gradually, new employees were added across the different offices. New services and capabilities supplemented the company’s current offerings. Human Systems Integration and Project Management were among these new additions.

Present Day

2009 has proven to be another year of growth for Next Wave Systems.

➢NWS added more than 10 employees

The company chose this year to begin adding new professionals to the company, including a new Chief Financial Officer, a Public Affairs Officer, a Chief Information Officer, and three new Administrative Assistants. This year also brought several new engineers and a multimedia team to the company.

➢In the spring of 2009, the Pekin Office moved into its current facilities.

The purpose of the move was to give the Pekin employees a space where they could entertain potential and existing customers in a more professional atmosphere. Also, the addition of new employees required more space. The former main office location was retained for production purposes and additional office space.

➢In the fall of 2009, NWS expanded with the creation of two new office locations

To expand its presence in the state of Indiana, NWS opened the Bedford location. The Bedford location now serves as a link to NAVSEA Crane and a venue to expand NWS’s offered services of human systems integration, multimedia production, and software engineering.

To begin creating a national presence, NWS opened the Huntsville, AL location. This is NWS’s first location outside the state of Indiana.
